Detecting Heii Reionization from a Sudden Injection of En- Tropy in the Intergalactic Medium *

چکیده
The temperature of the low-density intergalactic medium is set by the balance between adiabatic cooling resulting from the expansion of the universe, and photo-heating by the UV-background. A sudden injection of entropy from the reionization will increase the temperature of the gas, leading to a broadening of the hydrogen Lyman-α absorption lines produced in the IGM, and observed in the spectra of background quasars. We present a method based on wavelets to characterise objectively the line widths of such absorption lines. We use high resolution hydrodynamical simulations to demonstrate that the algorithm can detect changes in temperature of order of 50 per cent on scales ≥ 5000 km s. We apply the method to a UVES/VLT spectrum of quasar 0055–269 (zem = 3.7) and detect at the 99 per cent confidence level a sudden increase in temperature below redshift z ∼ 3.3, which we interpret as evidence for Heii reionization.

Intergalactic He II absorption and the baryonic content of the Lyman forest
Intervening intergalactic HeII λ304 absorption has so far been detected toward four high redshift quasars by HST and HUT. The quantitative interpretation of these data provides a measure of the ionization in the absorbing gas in the form of the ratio of residual HeII ions to HI atoms. Assuming a standard Big Bang helium abundance, this ratio can be used to derive a lower limit on the baryonic c...
متن کاملTHE IMPACT OF TEMPERATURE FLUCTUATIONS ON THE Lyα FOREST POWER SPECTRUM
We explore the impact of spatial fluctuations in the intergalactic medium (IGM) temperature on the Lyα forest flux power spectrum near z ∼ 3. We develop a semi-analytic model to examine temperature fluctuations resulting from inhomogeneous HI and incomplete HeII reionizations. There are two main motivations for this investigation. First, detection of these fluctuations might provide insight int...
متن کاملThe Thermal Memory of Reionization History
The recent measurement by WMAP of a large electron scattering optical depth τe = 0.17 ± 0.04 is consistent with a simple model of reionization in which the intergalactic medium (IGM) is ionized at redshift z ∼ 15, and remains highly ionized thereafter. Here, we show that existing measurements of the IGM temperature from the Lyman-alpha (Lyα) forest at z ∼ 2 − 4 rule out this “vanilla” model. Un...
متن کاملHeii Recombination Lines from the First Luminous Objects
The hardness of the ionizing continuum from the first sources of UV radiation plays a crucial role in the reionization of the intergalactic medium (IGM). While usual stellar populations have soft spectra, mini–quasars or metal–free stars with high effective temperatures may emit hard photons, capable of doubly ionizing helium and increasing the IGM temperature. Absorption within the source and ...

A self-consistent formalism to jointly study cosmic reionization and thermal history of the intergalactic medium (IGM) in a ΛCDM cosmology is presented. The model implements most of the relevant physics governing these processes, such as the inhomogeneous IGM density distribution, three different classes of ionizing photon sources (massive PopIII stars, PopII stars and QSOs), and radiative feed...
